First the tournament action: the FDU Team Challenge was won by the #15 Montville boys & the #17 Howell girls. I'll refer you to the always excellent dybuk75 for the recap. This event was bowled on a sport shot, so while the results matter subjectively, I won't penalize the teams that participated by logging their raw scores into their team averages.
The Brick tournament results are up on the Shore Conference site (in fact, they were up before I even went looking for them: thanks again, Coach Vargas). Hopefully there will be a writeup on nj.com at some point, since it seems weird to recap an event I wasn't able to attend, but I'll mention a couple of things.
The #1 Brick Memorial girls won the event by nearly 200 pins (yawn), but the battle for second was tight between #2 Brick Township, #3 Manchester Township & #6 Toms River South, with TRS taking it by 3 pins over Manchester with their season-best 2840. Central put up a season-high 2467 to finish 7th and Jackson Liberty put up a season-best 2422 (helped by Jasmine Brodowski's 644) to finish 8th in this very strong field. Manchester's Theresa Bedaro smoked the field in individual scores with a big 720. I'll tally the rest of the 600s in a bit.
The boys side looks to have been the high-level battle we might have expected, with #1 Woodbridge narrowly defeating #4 Brick Memorial and #9 Brick Township with scores at 3267-3212-3207 respectively. Unranked Edison outbowled two top-20 teams to finish 5th (2909), Both Jackson Liberty and Christian Brothers outperfomed their averages significantly to finish 6th and 8th respectively. As for individuals, Woodbridge's Kyle Bilawsky (743) proved himself a big-time tournament performer yet again, adding this title to his Bob James individual title earlier in the season, while Brick's Kyle Chirichello (715) scored the event's only other 700 and Woodbridge's John Drost missed by a stick (699).
Friday's regular season matches featured #4 Brick Memorial (still Lazarchickless, which is a totally real word) came up with a big 3236 behind Cameron Waldheim's 742 in a win over Southern. #14 Sayreville got back to their high-scoring ways in a win over Colonia (despite Colonia's season-high set of 2908), posting 3116, led by Chris DeOcampo's 723.
Fair Lawn is currently unranked, but showed their firepower with a 4-man 2410 on Friday. #3 East Brunswick got a battle from unranked Old Bridge but escaped with a 3-1, 3093-2980 victory. Bishop Ahr put up a season-high 2937 in their win over South River.
JP Stevens' Cameron LaPlant had the only other 700 I've seen, shooting 730.
Well, I more or less challenged the Manchester girls to defend their division supremacy against #12 Lacey, and they did just that, carding a big 2782 behind Theresa Bedaro (612) and Kimberly Wolf (613), and winning the match 2-1.
#2 Brick Township stole the South-A show from #1 Memorial, as the Dragons posted an almost-season-high 2954 featuring big scores from Julianna Forbes (625) and Cailyn Ryan (659). #7 Toms River North and state average leader Kamerin Peters (683) fired a season-high 2656 in a win over TRE.
A trio of unranked GMC squads looked good on Friday, as Colonia (2375), Monroe (2441) and South Brunswick (2385) posted top-20 level scores.

Midweek Roundup
Lots of action on Wednesday & Thursday. Starting with the boys...
#1 Woodbridge kept its excellent season going with a pair of shutouts over #14 Sayreville & New Brunswick. NJ's top team totaled 3177 & 3117. Several of their GMC rivals registered high scores as well: #16 St. Joseph (Metuchen) swept a pair of matches while posting series of 3154 & 3067. #18 Monroe came back from break with a 3009. South Plainfield (2880), Carteret (2487) and Perth Amboy (2649) managed season highs. But the biggest number in the state came from #10 South Brunswick, who blew out Piscataway with a 3271 that featured Tyler Kohutanycz's 704 along with 4 more 600s and a 595.
In the Shore Conference, #4 Brick Memorial continues to lead their division after a 2-1, 3036-2981 win over Central. #6 Manasquan & #7 Ocean Township had yet another closely fought battle, with Manasquan taking the points 2-1, but Ocean Twp scoring the higher series 3117-3095. #9 Brick Township kept pace with Memorial by firing 3121. Ocean also shot 3105 on Wednesday behind Logan Smith's 710. #19 St. Rose scored a 2-1 over Neptune and a 3016 set with help from Joe Ocello's 718.
Warren Hills is just outside the top 20 and already has the Skyland Conference roped & tied, but they found another level on Thursday by shooting 3210 behind Eric Lawson's 752 and a trio of other 600s.
#13 Indian Hills continues to be a dominant 4-man team, shooting (another) 2516 in a win over Teaneck. Elsewhere in the Big North, Wayne Hills put up a season-best 2463 in a win over Passaic Tech. Pompton Lakes is another strong 4-man team, which showed in the 2472 they carded on Thursday. They'll certainly be a threat in Group I in 2017, along with North Arlington, who shot a solid 4-man 2391.
I don't have a lot of data points with Caldwell, just 3 recorded matches, so I'm not sure if the impressive 3053 they put up against Seton Hall Prep was just a really good day, or a signal that they're a team that could do some damage. If anyone has any links to their conference, let me know.
update: ok, I found the SEC Colonial, which includes Caldwell. The other SEC divisions remain a mystery and any help would be appreciated.
Finally, Roselle Park dropped a 5-2 decision to Scotch Plains-Fanwood, but RP bowler Aaron Heimall stole the show with a 300/708.

No shock that #9 Teaneck had the top Big North score (2046), but Hackensack is a mild surprise with the second-best, an 1879 in a win over Ramapo.

Back to the Lanes
So nice to have scores & performances to report, and a Big North team and a GMC senior have given us plenty to work with.
Let's start on the girls side, where the headliner is South Brunswick senior Emily Alvarez, who came in to yesterday's match with JP Stevens averaging around 180, but a had a huge day to remember, shooting 300 in game one and carrying through with a 750 series (incidentally leading SB to their highest score of the season, 2451).
#13 Holy Angels is taking their turn at looking like the best team in the Big North, with a pair of 7-0 victories that totaled 2072 & 2122 (4-bowler matches). #8 Wayne Valley & #9 Teaneck each won matches 7-0, but without AHA's firepower (this time).
#1 Brick Memorial stayed undefeated with a 2830 to defeat TRE 3-0, while #6 TRS (2525) and #7 TRN (2576) swept as well. Southern shot 2370 in defeat.

The #13 Indian Hills boys look like a team with something to prove, coming out of the second half gate with a white-hot 4-man 2766. Joe Morando (702), Jack Miller (690), Ryan McGuire (680) and Jared Duncan (694) put it all together for one match, and then came back the next day with an impressive 2516.
I don't know that #4 Brick Memorial has anything to prove to anyone, but they showed something by firing 3141 without star Andrew Lazarchick (who's busy competing in the Team USA Trials, which is probably the best reason to miss a high school match I've ever heard). Alec Hehir's 745 led the Mustangs.
Each of the rest of the top 10 teams in action, #2 Shawnee, #5 TRS, #6 Manasquan, #10 South Brunswick, were all right around 3000.
Manasquan's win over #19 St. Rose was notable, not just because they were 3 tight games, but because it marked the 2017 debut of St. Rose's talented sophomore Joe Ocello, back from the mandatory transfer sitout. St. Rose was already dangerous.
Also dangerous: #15 Montville and their star Erik Katterman. Erik fired a big 751 and his team shot 3069 to defeat Morris Knolls; they're now 56-0 in the NJAC-South. Sussex Tech's up-and-down season swung back up with a 3073 in a win over Lenape Valley. Last year's state champs have a chnace to be right in it again.
