Weekend Tournaments

This is going to be a little more perfunctory than I had hoped, but I only have team results from the CJWC, and nothing yet from the Snowball.  But I want to get to the weekly rankings, so we've got to dispatch with this with just a few observations.

The Bergen County Girls tournament went down on Saturday, with an excellent, college-like format: 3 traditional games in the morning, followed by the top 10 advancing to a Baker round.  There were two big stories: first, Paramus Catholic's Kristen Kane had an amazing day, shooting 299-760 in the morning and pulling her team to a 2nd place finish.  The second story is that #8 Holy Angels has made it abundantly clear that they are the most dangerous tournament team in Bergen County.  We're never sure how 4-bowler teams will translate to five-bowler tournaments: question AHA at your own risk.

At the Central Jersey Winter Classic, the boys generally made my rankings look good.  #4 East Brunswick got off to a great start, firing 1121 in game 1 and taking the lead, but #2 Brick Memorial ran them down in game 2 and never looked back.  The Mustangs had the highest game score for both game 2 and game 3, which is pretty rare in an event as deep as this one.  #1 Woodbridge was excellent all day and finished 2nd (albeit 114 pins back), and East Brunswick held on for 3rd.  #8 Manasquan and #7 Ocean Township rounded out the top 5, as the only other teams over 3000 at the tournament, which was a surprise.

Several teams overachieved at the CJWC. #18 Warren Hills put up 2997 to finish 6th, besting a bunch of higher-ranked squads. From just outside the rankings, Monroe's 2903 was good enough for 11th of the 46 teams entered.

Eastern's 2888 and 12th place finish was a nice surprise and an improvement over earlier tournament results.  Howell had their second straight impressive finish at 14th (after 2nd in the FDU team challenge).  Same for Edison, whose 2812 bested at least seven teams with better stats.

The girls side went down to the wire, and it wasn't decided until the 30th frame.  #4 Warren Hills got out to the early lead and built it up to an 81-pin cushion over #1 Brick Memorial with a 1011 in game 2.  But Memorial roared back with a big 995 (2896 series) in game 3 while the Blue Streaks struggled a bit early in the final game.  Because of lane equipment delays, BM was finished at least five frames before WH, and Warren Hills bowled the final frames knowing exactly what they needed in order to win.  They finished off the tournament with 14 marks in 15 frames and converted four spares in the 10th to set up tournament individual champ Jenna Henderson.  Needing a mark, she buried three strikes to win the event by 21 and finish a team season-high 2917 set.

#2 Brick Township (2711) and #6 Ocean Township (2567) had solid days to finish 3rd & 4th, while #3 Manchester put up a big 993 in the third game to move up several spots and take 5th.

Like I mentioned above, I don't have individual results, but beyond the top three, I believe Amanda Shelters & Jillian Stuart of Brick Memorial each shot 634.

Good performances by girls teams included #11 Edison, who finished 7th and beat a couple of top ten teams.#13 Eastern proved it can compete with the big teams as well, finishing 9th. Unranked Colonia & Matawan each broke 2300 and finished 14th and 13th, respectively.

The best surprise team was unranked Woodbridge, who fired 815-818-891=2524 to finish 6th, beating out five ranked teams to earn the spot.

I have nothing from the Snowball but my own memories, which may or may not be accurate:

The #2 Brick Memorial boys and the #15 Seneca boys each made the Baker playoffs (top 4 teams), with BM's John Boughton shooting a 299 game. Seneca was the #1 seed, firing an absolute monster 4341, highlighted by Jacob Boris's 296 game and Eddie Cashwell's 928 4-game set.

The #1 Brick Memorial girls and the #4 Warren Hills girls were in qualifying position all day, and the WH girls went nuts in game 4, shooting 1093 behind Katie Winch's 277 and earning the #1 seed. #10 Lacey had an excellent day but came up just short of the top 4.

Warren Hills won their Baker semifinal over Truman (PA), while Pennsbury (PA) knocked off Brick Memorial in the semis and then Warren Hills in the final to take the title.

I'll try to post more about this event when I have it.

Boys Rankings later today.
