SOUTH JERSEY SINGLES CLASSIC

Possibly the greatest annual collection of high school talent at an individual tournament, aside from the NJSIAA singles finals, took place on Saturday at the South Jersey Singles Classic.  While the scores may not have been as lights out as in some past years, the competition was just as fierce and the winners just as deserving.

The opening qualifying set on the boys cut the field down to the top 36, with a cutline score of 562 (Andrew Xiques of TRS).  The top 4 received elimination round byes: Brandon Byrnes of Brick Memorial (657), Sam Bortnick of East Brunswick (671), Ridgefield Park's Derek Lewandowski (678) Absegami/Independent bowler Eddie Ross III (678).

The girls' side cutline at 24th place was 505 (Theresa Bedaro of Manchester), while byes went to Caylei Hoffman of St.John Vianney (599), TRN's Kamerin Peters (602), Freehold's Sarah Orensky (636) and North Jersey Singles champ Rhianna Smith of Hopatcong/Mt. Olive, who was attempting an incredibly difficult double title and got off to a tremendous start with a 278 single and the day's highest official set of 685.

The boys were then cut down to 16, where a single game score of 211 was necessary to survive, and the girls cut to 14 required a 182 single.

With the byes added back in, the quarterfinals were intense.  Bortnick was the only boy to cash in his bye, advancing with a 227 game, along with Rob Murray of  Morris Knolls (234), Shaun Boffard of South Plainfield (234), Kevin DiBernardo & cutline survivor Andrew Xiques of TRS (248 each), and David MacGillivray of Barnegat, who tied for the final spot with Dylan Wolfe of Manasquan at 225 each and then survived a one-ball rolloff.

The girls' side was just as tough, and again only one bye-holder managed to survive: Sarah Orensky, with a clutch 213.  Also advancing to the semifinals were Natalie Swindell of TRS (204), Julia Muro of Lacey (205), TRN's Paige Peters (206), Alexa Tieto of Ocean Township (226), and a blistering 249 from cutline-survivor Bedaro.

Xiques and Boffard each shot 223 in the semis, the only boys over 203, and completed unofficial sets of 686 and 682 respectively to set up the finals.  Swindell (232-650) and Bedaro (233-675) similarly emerged on the girls side with impressive numbers.

In the finals, Andrew Xiques of Toms River South stayed just as hot, finishing off his amazing cutline-to-trophy championship run with a 235-201 victory over Boffard

The girls' final was incredibly tight, with Toms River South's Natalie Swindell denying Bedardo her own cutline-to-champ story by just a single pin, 189-188, and giving TRS both champions this year.
