Late Last Week

A couple of good tournaments ran on Saturday, the Roll with the Indians hosted by Toms River South, and the Simon Baker Challenge at Majestic Lanes.

I don't have full results from RWTI, but on the boys' side, the hosts led after qualifying with a solid 3116, followed closely by Brick Memorial (3088), an ascending Manasquan team (2984) and a very strong performance by Toms River North (2957).  Brick Memorial survived the playoff rounds and emerged as the champion.

Brick Memorial's John Boughton scored the only 700 of the tournament, firing 723, while teammate Alec Hehir (684), David MacGillivray of Barnegat (682) and Toms River East's Dennis Carrino (681) put up impressive series as well.

The qualifying rounds of the girls event was a free-for-all, with six teams in the preseason top 8 all within just 76 pins, featuring leaders Toms River North (2658), followed by an impressive Lacey effort (2639), Brick Township (2624), Brick Memorial (2592), Manchester and Toms River South (2582 each).  And just like their male counterparts, the Brick Memorial girls took the playoff rounds and make the event a clean Mustang sweep.

Top girls qualifying series were shot by Brick Memorial's Amanda Shelters (631), Kamerin Peters of TRN (621), and TRS's Ashley Ferrara (614).

Full team qualifying results are available on the Shore Conference site: https://shoreconferencebowling.weebly.com/

Further north at the Baker challenge, there are no individual scores to report in this all-Baker-match tournament, but it looks like it was an incredibly exciting event.

For the boys, the top qualifiers were the usual suspects for the most part, e.g. East Brunswick was the #1 seed.  But JP Stevens continues to be on a nice run and took the #2 slot ahead of Woodbridge, followed by Monroe, Howell, Linden, South Brunswick and Iselin Kennedy.

Those top 8 faced off in 2-game Baker matches through 3 rounds of playoffs, with the majority of the matches in the first two rounds staying exceptionally close: East Brunswick defeated JFK by just 12 pins.  Linden upset Woodbridge 176-171 in a rolloff after a two-game tie at 390.  Monroe took out EB in the semis by just 12, and Linden escaped South Brunswick by just 9.  Linden did dominate the finals to take the title, with Monroe 2nd, South Brunswick 3rd and East Brunswick 4th.

The girls side didn't have quite as many tight matches, but instead had a fantastic story, as #8 seed Carteret went out and defeated #1 East Brunswick, #4 South Plainfield and #2 Woodbridge in succession to take a very unlikely (but well-earned) title.  Other finalists included Freehold Township (3rd), South Brunswick (5th), Edison (6th), and Monroe (7th).
