2018 Sectional Preview - Boys North 1B

BOYS NORTH 1B
Thursday, February 1 at Lodi Lanes

New for 2018
Hopatcong is up from G3 to G4, Harrison is up from G1 to G2. Wallkill Valley drops from G2 to G1, McNair drops from G2 to G1, Snyder, Hoboken and Lincoln enter after not entering in 2017.  Marist does not enter after participating last year.

What I got wrong
Lots of change in the entry matrix, so my expected drop of Dickinson from G4 to G3 didn't happen.  McNair's drop to G1 was unexpected also.

Ranked Teams Participating
#11 Sussex Tech, #12 Wayne Hills, #13 Hudson Catholic, 'Just Missed' St. Peter's Prep, 'Good Argument' West Milford

GROUP I
defending champ: Pompton Lakes

#13 Hudson Catholic finished second here last year, but looks like an overwhelming favorite in 2018.  The Hawks took the HCIAL with a 73-11 record and finished with a 198 GA, the best Group I mark in New Jersey. The lineup is loaded, with Geoffrey Origenes and his 217 average becoming a full-fledged star.  Jivan Persaud (199), Steven Beck (196), James Pabalonia (190) and Ashook Persaud (188) are all proven talents at this point as well. These guys will make it to Bowlero and are legitimate state title threats once they get there.

Wallkill Valley just missed advancement last year - by a single pin.  Now dropped down to Group I, they'll be battling to change that. A solid resume for the Rangers includes a fourth place finish at the Falcon and 5th at HWS.  Unfortunately, I have pretty much no individual data: no scores were submitted to nj.com and no standing sheet is out there, but the team's 168 GA is formidable.

Here's how strong the HCIAL was this season: the fifth place team is in a tossup for the #2 choice in this sectional: McNair. The Cougars put up a sneaky-good 163 GA, and while there are no huge averages on the books (Josh Canele leads the team at 178), there are no weak links.

One more team could make G1 interesting here: last year's champs from Pompton Lakes.  Much of 2017's talent graduated, but David Neil (192) and Michael Milligan remain to form the Cardinals' core, and a little production from down-lineup could put the NJIC-Colonial champs back in the state finals.

The rest of the field are longshots, with Eastern Christian having slightly better numbers than Secaucus, Hoboken and DePaul.

GROUP II
defending champ: Sussex Tech

105-0 in NJAC matches.  Tournament titles at Sparta NYE, Falcon Frenzee and Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex.  Two-time defending state champs. #11 Sussex Tech is an overwhelming force in Northwest New Jersey, and it's not going to stop at sectionals. The Mustangs haven't dropped below 2900 this calendar year, and that's plenty good enough to be the favorites here.  Joey Steele (222 overall), Matthew Grey (202) and Pat Danielson (200) have all put up big sets (and they're all underclassmen, so these guys aren't going away).  Add in solid contributions from Matt Danielson and  Danny McNeilly and we may be looking at a three-peat.

Harrison is just one point out of first place in the NJIC-Patriot and is the most likely to take the second TOC spot.  Luis Quito averages 175 and has gone as high as 619, but this is another group that features down-lineup ability.

Featuring a lineup with two 180+ bowlers in Ronald Young and Brant Rodriguez, Lincoln was competitive in the HCIAL and will be very competitive here in Group II.

Now, Hawthorne was mid-pack in the NJIC-C, but they have a big talent up top in 200-average Passaic champ Hunter Perry.  If Amanda Madara (163) and the rest of the Bears can step up a bit, they can make things interesting.

High Point is probably just out of range of the favorites, but Joe Gramignano is quality bowler and could make some noise in the individuals. Same goes for Manchester Regional (though Shannon Baer is very good), Lenape Valley and Newton.

GROUP III
defending champ: Wayne Hills

This one is gonna be fun, as two great Big North teams go at it in round five of a great rivalry.  By the numbers, #12 Wayne Hills is the clear favorite.  They're the defending champs after a wonderful 2017 postseason run.  They boast huge GA and T5, both are top ten in New Jersey. The Patriots went 78-13 against possibly the toughest schedule in the Big North, and they had the only 3000+ set in the FDU Team Challenge.  Most of all, they have a fantastic set of bowlers - the conference's only true 6-deep team.  Seniors Matt Klarberg (189), Nick Kent (200), Mason Smith (189) and Steve Neri (201) are joined by two much-improved sophomores, Tom Luchetta (210, 2nd at FDU) and Dylan Heinold (207). The sky's the limit here.

But West Milford isn't intimidated at all.  The Highlanders have beaten Wayne Hills in a regular season match, won the FDU Team Challenge in the Baker rounds, and took the Passaic County championship.  The numbers may be a bit behind, but part of that is top gun Andrew Finke (209 overall) missing a few matches for basketball. There's firepower down lineup; Tyler Nicol (190), Michael Nicholas (186) and freshman Ralph Utter (196) have all put up big numbers. Tossup.

A handful of teams are capable of springing an upset here, and Lakeland may be the best bet. The Lancers have taken their lumps in a brutal division, but they have talent: Colin Tailman (182) and Ray Schmitt (191) can score.  And they were quite competitive in the Passaic, finishing within 100 pins of Wayne Hills.

Wayne Valley was right there in the Passaic, too, and the Indians have a broad base of talent, with three guys: Jarrett D'Alessandro, Mike Natoli and Blake Fenske, over 180. Their top six averages are all underclassmen, too, so this is a program on the rise.  Wow, this Big North Independence division is just awesome.

There's no reason we can't have a contender from outside the Big North, and Kearny may well be that team.  Finshing 3rd in a very strong HCIAL, the Kardinals have a pair of great bowlers up top in Donovan Battistus (195) and Christian Davidson (188) and no weak links.

Sparta has gone as high as 2700 and could make things interesting, with a nice top three in Brian Trotter, John DePreker and John Ukstins, all over 187. Snyder has a brilliant top two in Terek Alston and Brandon Crawford, each over 200, while Vernon is a step or two behind the contenders.

GROUP IV
defending champ: Dickinson

There are a LOT of worthy contenders here.  Group III may play at the highest level, but Group IV will be the wildest and most competitive.

St. Peter's Prep, just outside the top 20, looks like the favorite to me. After a rough start in early season tournaments, they chased Hudson Catholic all season in-conference finished just behind, but beat them late in the season in a dual match, firing over 3100. The Marauders just keep getting better.  Jared Ammugauan has been an amazing constant, averaging over 225, but Zack Oswald (195), Jordan Veverka (188) and the rapidly improving Maverick Lindo (300-739 last week) are all making their mark.

North Bergen is a force to be reckoned with.  The HCIAA champs feature an excellent top two in Nicholas Dominy (197) and Chris Lopez (206 overall), another strong bowler in Chris Murray (184) and a high set of 2954. Expect the Bruins to be in the mix.

And expect Clifton, too.  11-2 in Big North matches, nobody has more top end talent, with the Mustangs' Johan Gamo (213 overall), Joe Paolillo (211) and Sean Cruz (200) able to match up with anyone north of the GMC. If the depth comes through, Clifton could put up a huge set.

After a second place finish in the Passaic, you have to give Passaic Tech an excellent chance to steal a TOC spot here. The Bulldogs are as built for 5-man events as anybody in the Big North aside from Wayne Hills. Kyron Fairley has been the star, averaging 197, and he has four teammates between 176 and 187 in Kevin Muncion, Marcsus Eusebio, Anthony Dubrino and Dino Stoupakis.

Hopatcong has numbers that are a bit below the others, but a few quality tournament efforts - 3rd at HWS, 5th at Sparta NYE say they're capable.  Kyle Harkins has been solid, averaging 180, but the Chiefs are the second best team in the NJAC-North for one big reason: Rhianna Smith and her 210 average.

Finishing 4th in the HCIAL is a good result, and Bayonne is a good team. Matt Nilan (196) and Miguel Florendo (183) lead the attack, and they'll have to be really 'on' to give the Bees a fighting chance. Defending champs Dickinson is in the same boat, with a dynamic top two in Ray Ramos (207) and Kyle O'Mara (195).

Passaic is probably just out of contention, but Michael Polanco (205) is certainly capable of competing for an individual spot. Union City has nice depth and finished over .500 but looks to be just short of firepower.

2018 Sectional Preview - Boys North 1A

BOYS NORTH 1A
Saturday, February 3 at Bowler City, Hackensack

New for 2018
Pascack Valley is up from G3 to G4. Ridgefield Park drops from G3 to G2. St. Joseph of Montvale is up from G2 to G3. Rutherford, New Milford and Dwight-Morrow entered after last year's absence, while Park Ridge and Old Tappan did not enter.

What I got wrong
There's a reason my group listings are projections: Due to the mix of missing teams and new teams, Pascack Valley ended up in Group IV, instead of Group III where I had listed them.

Ranked Teams Participating
None in the top 20, but Fair Lawn is listed in "Just Missed", while Pascack Valley, Ridgewood and Demarest are all under "have a good argument."

GROUP I
defending champ: Hasbrouck Heights

After a 3rd place finish in 2017, North Arlington is a very strong favorite here, with a 183 GA and a starting 5 that is nearly 100 pins clear of the field. Currently 70-0 in the NJIC Meadowlands division, and having won the Bergen County small schools title, the Vikings have a solid, established top 4 in Eric McKenna (198 overall average, FDU team challenge champ), Brandon Barth, Liam Henkel and Kenny Bennett.

The defending champs from Hasbrouck Heights have an excellent chance to advance again this year.  They're sitting 4th in the NJICM and have pretty good numbers for a Group I team, with a 161 GA. Shawn Calhoun leads the Aviators with a 172 average.

If there's a contender to break into the top two, it might be Leonia. Quietly putting up decent numbers in the Patriot division, the Lions are led by one of North Jersey's best female bowlers, Gabrielle Capalad, who is fresh off a Bergen County individual championship, as well as Andy Hong who's gone as high as 646 this season.

Last year's runnerup, Becton is a solid 3rd in the NJICM, and they have a star at the top in Trevor Deliantis and his 193 average.  The Wildcats will need a strong effort down-lineup, but they're a very live dog for one of the TOC spots.

Palisades Park and Bergen Arts may be dark horses worth considering.  The PP Tigers lead the Patriot division with a 66-39 record, while the Yellow Jackets may have enough depth to make a run.

Wallington, New Milford and Midland Park complete the Group I field.

GROUP II
defending champ: Fort Lee

Mahwah, 12-0 in Big North matches and fresh off a 2nd place in the Bergen, are the favorites in Group II.  Carrying an impressive 184.7 GA, the Thunderbirds are led by junior Liam Barron, who's averaging just under 200 in Big North play. Shane Graynor, Tyler Klein and Eric Grunblatt are all over 180 as well, giving Mahwah excellent depth.

If there's a team that can challenge Mahwah, it's Lyndhurst, last year's runnerup.  The Golden Bears have put up an excellent GA: 175, a solid 3rd place at the Bergen, and a strong second place in the NJIC-Meadowlands.   Most importantly, they have the best 1-2 in the grouping, with Troy Villani and Michael Lavell each averaging 193.

Graduation cost defending champs Fort Lee their favorite status, but the cupboard is far from bare: they're 8-4 in conference action, sport a very good 868 T5 (2nd in the grouping) Michael Choe is averaging 182, and the Bridgemen have at least five good options behind him, including junior Jason Jeon who's come on of late.

After the top three, there are a bunch of teams with very similar stats.  My top choice as a darkhorse is probably Ridgefield Park, because the Scarlets can throw three guys at you with 180+ averages: Roberto Martinez, Jesse Kim and Brandon Voorhees.
**I have received information that after a regular-season absence, Ridgefield Park superstar Derek Lewandowski will be competing for the Scarlets at sectionals.  This is huge - Lewandowski averaged 215 last year and is one of the very best in North Jersey.  This makes RP essentially co-favorites with Mahwah in the sectional.

Westwood can put some good bowlers out there, too, especially Cardinals senior Anthony Calamari who's over 180 in his senior year.  A strong second place finish in the NJIC Colonial, as well as a solid 164 GA, shows you can't underestimate Glen Rock.  The Panther's Matt Passaro shot 645 just last week. Ramsey may not throw any huge averages at you, but they have five solid bowlers, including Tommy McGrath who shot 658 earlier this season for the Rams.

Last year's third place team, Dumont, is going to need a lot of its depth to fire to make a run in 2018, but the Huskies have a huge weapon in Louis Ferrante, who could make some singles noise.  Pascack Hills will have no trouble filling all five spots with decent scores.  Senior Matthew Miller is the Cowboys top gun.  Contention is probably out of reach for Rutherford, who managed a fifth place finish in the NJIC-Colonial.

GROUP III
defending champ: Indian Hills

The top-ranked team here is Demarest.  High average bowlers in Nick Allegro, Andrew Chung and Ben Nelson have helped the Norsemen to an outstanding 189 GA and a 3rd place finish in the Bergen. And it certainly helps to have one of the very bowlers in the state around, and Jordan Tse certainly fits the bill, with multiple 300s and a Big North-Best 224 average.

But don't count out the defending champs just yet.  Despite huge graduation losses, Indian Hills has reloaded nicely, showing stats that are just a hair behind Demarest. Ryan McGuire has been lights-out, averaging 213 in-conference, and the Braves are getting great scores from Jack Miller, Sorab Taneja and Joe Falsetta as well.

There's some separation after the top two, but Bergenfield has plenty enough talent to fill that gap.  Peter Bondy (197 average), Derek Weigl (192) and George Ferguson (184) have all put up big numbers at times this season, and the Bears have outscored Demarest in a dual match.

I'm not sure where they turn for the fifth spot, but Ramapo is solid at the top, with Jason and Kevin Roccanova as well as Natty Mucci; all have bested 640 in 2017-18. The Raiders might be the best bet to surprise.

Tenafly has the depth, and it's not much of a stretch to think they might put it all together for one day.  Dongyoung Kim and Leon Li have the Tigers' top averages.

Similar stats across the next few teams: Garfield is 3rd in the NJIC-C but probably just short on firepower. Same goes for St. Joseph (Montvale), who has six capable men for the five tournament slots, as well as Paramus, who did manage to take down Ramapo back in December.

River Dell is nearly all underclassmen, and a team to watch closely over the next year or two.  Dwight-Morrow is a brand new team, and it's always great to see a new program willing to come bowl with the best at sectionals.

GROUP IV
defending champ: Northern Highlands

Last year it was Group III that was the big drawing card in North 1-A, but this year, the stars come out for Group IV. By my count, we have three outstanding teams and at least four live dogs in this grouping.  This is what tournament bowling is about.

Fair Lawn is the favorite on paper.  Just outside the state top 20, the Cutters took the Bergen Big Schools title and sport a genuinely outstanding GA of 193.  Much more importantly, they have some seriously fantastic bowlers.  Tyler (192) and Jake (198) Nappi have gotten it done all year.  Anthony Frangiosa was the best story at the Bergen. And junior Nick Greco has been at an all-state level, averaging over 216, tossing multiple 300s and appearing near the state's top series list with a 787.

But here's the thing: Pascack Valley's stats are every bit as good. Four brilliant juniors make the Indians go: Henry Tipping (195), Scott Morris (205), Brian Biml (205) and Trevor Lauber (201) can all hurt you, can all throw numbers. Throw in their 10-0 Big North match record: these guys like to win. Pencil them into next year's top 10, but this year might be theirs as well.

And yet, I won't be surprised at all if one of those top two teams doesn't make it to Bowlero, because Ridgewood is damn good, too. Matt Myers (204 avg) has been great all year, and Brian Skettini (205) is as hot as anybody in North Jersey right now.  And they definitely go five-deep.  The Maroons beat out Pascack Valley for 2nd in the Bergen and certainly have the ability to do it again.

Paramus Catholic may be able to hang as well. They placed 4th at the Bergen, and have gone 9-1 in Big North matches. A very good top three of George Held, Julian Armstrong and Alex Rodriguez (194 average) put the Paladins in the neighborhood, and what might be the best depth in the grouping could get them home.

Defending champs Northern Highlands isn't going to sneak up on anyone like last year, but a repeat performance isn't totally out of the question either. The Highlanders have a top-line talent in Jacob Lucibello (197) average, and a solid bolwer in Maks Halpin, as well as last year's hero, Will Cunningham.  They placed 2nd at the Falcon Frenzee, so tournament success is nothing new.

So many good squads here... Teaneck is another one. Matt Ramos (190), Kyle Campbell (186) and Trevor Savoye (180), underclassmen all, could get the Highwaymen's program to the next level a year early if everybody fires at once.

Bergen Tech is another very young team - the top four of Zachary Chan, Michael Falcone, Walter Wargacki and Elian Calvo include zero seniors.  The Knights are probably a year away, but you never know.

Bergen Catholic is slightly overmatched in this loaded grouping, but Hunter Butkera (185) has had a pretty good season. Despite an upset over Highlands last week, Hackensack is likely a bit outclassed here. Chris Previtali of Don Bosco Prep has a real chance at individual advancement.

INDIVIDUAL
His team isn't entered, but Park Ridge freshman Joseph Mahoney is most definitely a threat to take one of the 12 available advancer spots, with his 208 overall average.

Wrapping the week and what's next

Well, I made a big deal out of East Brunswick's fantastic 3519 on Thursday, so I probably have to mention that they did EVEN BETTER on Friday. Matt Mai (728) and Sam Bortnick (721) went big, and Daniel Lenk broke the scoreboard with a 268-258-300=826, giving the Bears an incredible 3542 set.  Monroe also shot a lights-out 3396 behind 700s from Lou Folgore, Ryley McKiernan and Devin Maddox (750).

Also, because the HCIAL doesn't get a lot of press (truly, Shore & GMC suck most of the air out of the room), I thought I'd mention a high-level true 5-man match between their two best teams: St. Peter's Prep defeated Hudson Catholic 5-2 by shooting a pair of games over 1100. Final tally was 3133 to 3032.  There's a lot of talent in Hudson county.

Anyway, we've got an  honor scores list from Friday's action (and a few that didn't get reported, or that I missed).  Hoping to get boys rankings out tomorrow so I can get started on sectional previews.  Unfortunately, NJSIAA hasn't put out North 1-B or North 2 entries yet, so we'll see what happens next week.

County Tournaments & Honor Scores

County tournament results are coming in, bit by bit, and we're even getting some press for them, which is great.

The Union County singles tournaments were held, and got a little writeup on nj.com right here.  Evan Weinberg of Dayton and Kiara Powell, very impressive bowlers both, won the individual titles.  I don't have a full breakdown, just the six game totals in the article, so I can't add to the honor scores list, but Luis Torres of Roselle had a very nice unofficial 741 in his first three stepladder matches.

The Morris County tournament took place on Thursday, and I really hope that somebody can come through with full results on this one.  The Daily Record wrote it up here.  Morris Knolls took the title in a Baker final over Morris Hills.  Montville's Adam Gelvan took the individual title with a 708 set against a deep field, while Emma Thies of Jefferson and West Morris senior Paige Piombino tied for the girls' title at 586.

Finally, Sussex Tech took their third straight Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex championship on Wednesday, besting a game Warren Hills squad (2907) with an excellent 3092 set. Francis Vitelli of North Hunterdon was the boys individual champ with a 712 series, and Rhianna Smith won her 3rd individual tournament title of the year with a 704.  The Warren Hills girls, while not eligible to win the event, bowled as a team and put up a state-record 1153 in game 2 (according to USHBF).  The Herald gave the event some good coverage here.

Also, though I've shied away from writing about regular season results, I have to give a shout to the #1 East Brunswick Bears, who carded a massive 3519 set yesterday, which included the season's second 800; Sam Bortnick with a 244-278-279=801.

I've really got to stop putting this off for a couple of days; the list gets ridiculous.

Top Tournament Averages

These numbers are a bit squishy.  The minimum is 7 games (which excludes several very good bowlers - Michael Liu, Evan Weinberg, Nick Thies, Joey Steele, Sarah Orensky, Emma Thies and Kaitlyn Lowey to name a few with great tournament averages in limited opportunities , but a tournament average should be more than one or two events, I think), and though most of these bowlers are well above that threshold, I feel like **small sample size alert** should be flashing at the top of the post.  Aside from that, I don't have complete individual results from several events, so full accuracy is not there for everyone.  It's also possible that someone performed great in a couple of tournaments and it slipped under my radar.  But I have the data, and it's part of the story, so I'll put out what I've got.  If you see something you know to be inaccurate, notice someone missing and/or you have full results from a tournament that I don't, please let me know.  Includes tournaments through the GMC individual.

Tournaments and Honor Scores

Four tournaments over the last few days, and in an encouraging development, three of them got actual media coverage.  Both Dybuk's blog and northjersey.com have excellent writeups of the Passaic County tournament (won by West Milford boys, Wayne Valley girls, Hunter Perry of Hawthorne and Bryonna Richburg of Mary Help) and the Bergen girls tournament, won by Holy Angels in a thrilling Baker final, and Gabrielle Capalad of Leonia.

mycentraljersey gave good ink to an exciting GMC Individual tournament, with a dramatic one-pin final win by Lanasia Neal of South Plainfield over Victoria Stasicky of Monroe, as well as a final-match 300 game by 2017-18's top gun, Daniel Lenk of East Brunswick over James Stoveken of Woodbridge. Lenk completed an unofficial 790 set in the stepladder.  (All 600 & 700 sets will be listed with other honor scores).

The Woodbridge Classic also took place on Saturday.  I only have team results, but it looks like there were some stories to tell.  St. Joseph's of Metuchen got out to a big lead, shooting 2160 for the two traditional games, but Edison was lights out in the Baker rounds, carding 246-233-248 in the first three games and taking the title with a 3190 total.  St. Joe's finished 2nd, followed by Woodbridge, Brick Township and Union.

The girls event was incredibly competitive, with South Brunswick leading after the traditional games on the strength of a 2-game 1691.  Brick Township, Colonia, Woodbridge, Carteret and South Plainfield were all within 100 pins headed into Baker action.  Strangely enough, the standings remained exactly the same after the five Baker games, and South Brunswick took the championship by 31 pins over Brick, in a bit of a surprise.

High games were bowled by Collin McBride of Colonia (278) and Ashley Espy of Carteret (225).

Rankings will be late in the week, as (believe it or not) sectionals start NEXT WEEK and I'm planning on starting sectional previews next Monday.  Hoping to get in some top average stuff this week as well.

Girls Rankings for 1-18-18

One of the rankings factors I've been chasing since day one is the effect of what house teams bowl their matches in. I've yet to come up with a satisfactory answer, and the statistical analysis necessary to really approach the problem is beyond my time... and probably beyond my expertise, really.  The problem comes in bold relief right here: Six of the top seven girls teams bowl every match at Ocean Lanes, which seems to be fairly high-scoring house.  The seventh, Warren Hills, bowls half its matches at Oakwood Lanes, definitely a high-scoring house, and the other half at four different houses, all of which are considerably tougher.  What effect does this have on the stats?  Nothing?  One pin?  Ten pins?  I have no idea.  I tend to just go with the numbers.  But after the past season and a half, I've come to the conclusion that the tournament record has to speak a little louder when the numbers are relatively close. Rankings were done before any regular season action this week.

THE TOP TWENTY GIRLS BOWLING TEAMS IN NEW JERSEY

1.  Warren Hills (GA: 179.1  T5: 890)
Fourth best in both statistical measures, but two more tournament victories over the weekend, and they were the only team right at the top (11 pins ahead of Brick Twp Saturday, 5 pins back of TRN in qualifying Monday) in both events. Kelcie Mannon (202), Katie Winch (188) and Olivia Ostander (188) have all killed it in tournaments, and freshman Sam Irwin has her conference average up to 170. At this point, they've earned #1 until someone takes it away from them. Put up 2872 in a match last week, so it's not just tournaments where they shine.

2.  Toms River North (GA: 185.8  T5: 927)
Absurdly talented, these Mariners; Paige and Kamerin Peters are amazing, and they have no less than four bowlers averaging over 170 behind them, including Mackenzie Dudas who's over 185 in tournaments. Fired 2816 & 2984 matches last week before the tournament weekend and showed great toughness in wrestling away the top seed from Warren Hills and surviving a tight semifinal. Five of the top six are underclassmen.  Be afraid.

3.  Brick Memorial (GA: 181.9  T5: 906)
Nearly a statistical dead heat between Memorial and Township - Friday's 2935 by Memorial is the best set either has thrown in a while, and Amanda Shelters has been nearly unstoppable, with a state-best 213 overall average. Mustangs got a 700 out of Veronica Lewis on Friday, and Rachel Katz is averaging over 188 as well, so you need to watch out for the entire lineup. Gonna be some fun battles with TRN next month.

4.  Brick Township (GA: 180.9  T5: 907)
2nd at CJWC by just 11 pins, the Dragons will be co-favorites at states.  Caylin Ryan has been on fire, shooting 650-632 over the weekend. Cristy Sharkey and Christina Gonzalez have been solid performers all season, and Julianna Forbes is capable of carrying to top team.  They're 11-1 in matches in Shore-South-A, going up against 3 other top-7 teams.

5.  Lacey Township (GA: 173.7  T5: 890)
The current hot team in New Jersey.  Huge performance at Snowball, beating out rival Manchester and both Brick schools to make the semifinals. Outstanding top three in Liz Schreier, Julia Muro and Autumn Laird becomes an outstanding top four with the return of Claudia Schreier. For now, have to consider them the top team in Shore-South-B.

6.  Manchester Township (GA: 173.3  T5: 881)
But don't discount Manchester, even for a second.  The only team outside TRN that goes five-deep with averages over 170, the Hawks can explode for a big number, as they did in the last game of the CJWC to move up to fifth. Theresa Bedaro has been one of the best, carrying a 188 overall average, and Vicki Smith has improved nearly 10 pins during her senior year.

7.  Toms River South (GA: 170.1  T5: 847)
The final team of the seven-team breakaway at the top, TRS has broken 2690 twice this season, put up 2641 at CJWC, and finished ahead of both Brick schools at the Snowball. Natalie Swindell's senior year has been fantastic, winning South Jersey singles and carrying an overall average above 191. Lots of talent throughout the lineup: Hannah Dalton put up a loud 673 on Monday.

8.  Teaneck (GA: 164.6  T5: 813)
Three four-man 2000 sets last week, as the best team in the Big North bides its time until a sectional showdown with #1 Warren Hills. They're 56-0 in conference play, Margaux Lesser is up to #2 in the conference with a 187 average, and when the whole tournament team is together, they're a dangerous bunch.

9. Woodbridge (GA: 158.7  T5: 790)
This begins a six-team run of GMC squads, and there's no meaningful separation between any of them. The Barrons have the best combination of recent results (2563 in a match last week, 9th at CJWC) and season-long stats. Eliza Abreu, Breanna Tolocka and Meagan Raimondo are all carrying averages over 160.

10. East Brunswick (GA: 160.6  T5: 801)
Bit of a down week, dropping a set to South Brunswick and finishing 10th at CJWC, but still sitting on excellent season-long numbers. The Bears are paced by Madison Steinbeck, who's been fantastic, carrying a 194 overall average, and  junior Alicia McLaughlin who's averaging 167.

11. Monroe (GA: 158.6  T5: 787)
The Falcons had a tough week, but Victoria Stasicky and Bridget Bolan, averaging 195 & 187 respectively in GMC play, had strong tournament debuts, and should be right in the middle of a tough battle in Central Group IV.

12. Carteret (GA: 153.1  T5: 761)
If this were based on just the hottest team, Carteret would be much higher.  Lit it up last week, shooting 2478-2465-2565-2430 on four consecutive days, including a strong 8th place at CJWC.  They may not have a high-average superstar, but Angela Baginsky, Ashley Espy and Amanda Medvetz are all over 160 on the season, and they're all on the upswing.

13. South Brunswick (GA: 158.4  T5: 796)
See how tight these GMC numbers are?  Put up an excellent 2506 set last Wednesday.  Another team with a strong top three: Rachel Guida, Kirsten Thorne and Jillian Kwock have been between 166 and 173 all season.

14. Edison (GA: 157.5  T5: 786)
Shot 2390 & 2432 (in a 2-2 draw with Woodbridge) last week before a tough day at CJWC. Tori Johnson has made a huge jump this year and is one of the very best in the conference with a 188 average, while underclassmen Sam Osiadacz and Faby Jean-Denis are each over 170.

15. Wayne Valley (GA: 158.7  T5: 781)
It's always helpful to have a superstar, and Wayne Valley is near the top of the Big North (51-5) due in large part to Marissa Cosentini's dominant 207 conference average.  Haley D'Alessandro and Melody Morris are having strong years as well. Valley put up a 4-man 2052 last week.

16. Freehold Township (GA: 156.3  T5: 796)
The second place team in Shore-Central-B has better numbers than the first place team, especially that high T5 rating.  Star Sarah Orensky (184 overall) is surrounded by several quality competitors, led by Jaden Schaefer and Kristen Pagliaro.

17. Mahwah (GA: 156.4  T5: 768)
Backed up last week's inspired FDU tournament effort with a pair of 4-man 1900s. Mahwah has the depth to be a postseason threat, with Justina Kender, Allie Adamski and top-five freshman Michaella Raab all averaging over 160.

18. Ramsey (GA: 155.5  T5: 743)
The biggest threat to Carteret's state Group I title hopes,  Lindsay Pepper and Angela DiNallo are a fantastic top two for a team that put up a strong 1977 4-man set last week and then took Mahwah 4-3 in a match last Thursday.

19. Holy Angels (GA: 155.5  T5: 774)
Churning out sets in the high 1800s (4-man), Holy Angels has a strong top two in Alexa Hernandez and Amelia Brunda, each over 170 overall, and has the depth to match up well with Mahwah in North Group II.

20. Central  (GA: 149.2  T5: 778)
Ally Dalton and Madison McFadden lead a talented group that can take a game from the blue-chippers in the Shore South A once in a while.  If they put it together for one day, they could do some damage in the postseason.

FIVE THAT JUST MISSED

Colonia
Colts Neck
Washington Township
Ewing
Ocean Township

Lots of star power in this group, led by Laryssa Fiore of Colonia, Morgan Gitlitz of Colts Neck and Alexa Tieto of Ocean Township.  Ewing is 31-1 in matches; their numbers are just a tiny bit short. Washington Township may still make it into the rankings when they get some more matches in - Diana Chan is having an excellent season.

FIVE MORE TO KEEP AN EYE ON

Bergen Tech
Eastern
JP Stevens
Manasquan
Wall Township

Eastern was so great at CJWC I almost threw out the season numbers and ranked them. Bergen Tech has been very busy and competitive in the Big North.  JP Stevens broke 2400 last week.  Manasquan is giving Ocean Twp a fight in Shore-Central-A, and Wall is right there with them, shooting 2320 last week.

Boys Rankings for 1-17-18

We're in a pretty similar spot to last year at this time, though it was girls back then.  Anyone who remembers that won't be surprised by who's #1...

THE TOP TWENTY BOYS BOWLING TEAMS IN NEW JERSEY

1.  East Brunswick (GA: 216.2  T5: 1066)
Brick Memorial had a fantastic weekend to be sure, but the Bears were great at CJWC (3258 for 2nd), carded a 3331 set on Wednesday, has a better league record at 11-0-1, and, most importantly, still has a massive statistical edge with their 216.2 game average and 1066 T5.  I can't toss all that out on the basis of one head-to-head tournament result. Daniel Lenk and Sam Bortnick continue to be easily the top 1-2 in the state, and there's great talent up & down the lineup; Andrew Mai shot 758 in the GMC individual qualifier on Tuesday.

2.  Brick Memorial (GA: 208.0  T5: 1027)
Not just a fantastic weekend; earlier in the week the Mustangs put up 3143 & 3065 in conference sweeps. That's four straight tournament wins for this group, and they're getting huge numbers from the entire lineup; all five starters are averaging over 200 in both conference matches and in tournaments, where John Boughton has been brilliant, with 3 700 sets and a 223 average over 17 tournament games, and Alec Hehir and Michael Guzman are each right around 210.

3.  Woodbridge (GA: 208.1  T5: 1036)
The Barrons haven't quite put it all together in a tournament yet, but 3164 at CJWC is pretty damn good and their depth is just as scary as it was last year: by my count they have eight bowlers averaging over 190, and Alex Silva has joined the top three (Stoveken, Bilawsky & Drost) with a GMC average over 200.

4.  St. Joseph-Metuchen (GA: 207.1  T5: 1003)
I'm guilty of dismissing St. Joe's excellent GA because they're a 6/5 team with absurd depth, which props up the average of a team without any huge (210+) averages. Third place at the CJWC with a massive 3213 set proves me very wrong: this team is just great, with John Hoban, Brendan Sosinski & company each capable of being the star.  Earlier in the week they posted 3320, 3145 and 3296.  This is the state's top Group II team right now.

5.  Toms River South (GA: 205.0  T5: 1020)
Sixth at each of the weekend tournaments show that the Indians are great even on (relative) off days. Kyle Oliveri, Kevin DiBernardo and Andrew Xiques have each proven capable of being the top gun on a great team, and the depth is definitely good enough to compete with absolutely anyone. The string of just-short tournament finishes may well end with a conference title, a sectional title, or a state title.

6.  Monroe (GA: 204.0  T5: 1013)
An off-day at the CJWC (12th place 2886) doesn't take the shine off this top-flight group; they carded 3167 earlier in the week and continue to trot out a fearsome top three in Folgore, McKiernan and Waynor. When you've got someone like Joe Hoehler down lineup capable of shooting 707 (as he did in GMC individuals), you're gonna contend for titles.

7.  Wayne Hills (GA: 201.8  T5: 1014)
Easily the best team up north, by the stats.  Four-man 2505 in conference action last week. Enough depth to do a lot of mixing and matching; when they put up a pure 5-man squad, Group III better watch out.  Sophomores Tom Luchetta and Dylan Heinold have had breakout seasons, averaging over 217 & 206 respectively, and the senior leadership from Steve Neri & Nick Kent should serve them well in the postseason.

8.  Brick Township (GA: 197.1  T5: 996)
Bit of a down week before the tournaments: respectable 7th at CJWC and then a very strong 3200 at Snowball. I keep mentioning the Dragons' youth, but they have a very good senior in Nick Gross, whose 734 at the Snowball was huge. Sophomore Kyle Chirichello is averaging over 204 in tournament action and the whole lineup is over 195 overall. More than talented enough to do damage in the postseason.

9.  St. Rose (GA: 194.1  T5: 1014)
Shore Central A leaders shot 3112 and 3062 before a 3rd place finish at the Winter Wave (2959). Four bowlers over 203 in-conference (Chiusano, Toth, Vanderslice & Schuld) and a fifth, Vinny Mastria, paced the team with a 651 at the Wave. At the top of a very short list of state Group I contenders.

10. South Plainfield (GA: 2008  T5: 998)
Had a rough day at Bowlero, but earlier in the week this talented crew hung 3090 & 3177 on their opponents, moving to 10-1/41-3 in GMC action. Tyler & Ryan Berardi as well as Chris Lacasale are all around 190, providing excellent firepower behind a great top three, and setting up this Group II contender for conference & sectional title runs.

11.  Sussex Tech (GA: 196.6  T5: 984)
These Mustangs keep on rollin', posting 3094 and 3082 in NJAC matches last week. Sophomore Matthew Grey has made a huge leap, from 179 last year up to a big 205 average in 2017-18, while Joey Steele is simply one of the very best bowlers in New Jersey right now.

12.  Manasquan (GA: 196.2  T5: 990)
Very busy, very consistent week: 2849, 2959, 2983, 2990 (2nd at Wave), 2978 (8th at CJWC). Kyle Bauter & Dylan Wolfe are a fantastic top two, averaging 219 & 213 in conference action, while Ryan Anderson is over 200 in tournaments.  And they're all juniors.

13.  Hudson Catholic (GA: 199.1  T5: 989)
Gaudy regular season numbers for the top team in the HCIAL, especially from 214-averaging Geoffrey Origenes, Jivan Persaud (205) and Steven Beck (199).  Only thing missing from the resume is a tournament performance.

14.  Morris Knolls (GA: 194.5  T5: 973)
Very strong 9th place in the loaded CJWC field (2928) and currently 59-4 in a good conference. Joey Lamont & Rob Murray have been high on the average lists all year, but watch out also for Chase DiMare, who broke through at the New Year's Eve tournament with a 656 set.

15. Ocean Township (GA: 192.7  T5: 1002)
Huge jump in T5 with Doug Rhoades joining the lineup and averaging 222 through his first 9 games. The results have been impressive: 3039 in a regular match, 1st at the Wave (3003) and a 2872 at CJWC. They already had top-to-bottom ability and a stud in Matt Redbord; now they can compete with anyone on any day.

16. North Brunswick (GA: 197.8  T5: 980)
2917 for a solid 10th place finish at CJWC.  Gavin Lugo has flown under the radar a bit, averaging a remarkably consistent 197 behind star David Burrows.

17.  South Brunswick (GA: 195.9  T5: 964)
Subpar week for the Vikings salvaged with a nice 11th at CJWC (2900). Anthony Fama, Matt Marich and Nick Delacruz each broke 600 at the GMC Individuals, qualifying for the finals.

18.  Edison (GA: 195.2  T5: 974)
Broke 3100 twice last week, including an impressive split with #3 Woodbridge.  A rough day at CJWC was probably an anomaly, as Smith (718), Banwer, Buchany and Raleigh Gough were all back on the plus side by Tuesday.

19.  Seneca (GA: 192.9  T5: 963)
7th at the Snowball is nothing to sneeze at.  Exceptional balance in this starting lineup, with any of the starters (Ludikowski, Malcolm, Tippin, Cashwell & Walters) capable of taking the lead and throwing a number.

20.  Linden (GA: 193.1  T5: 975)
Incredibly young and talented, led by two sophomores (Anthony Golabek & Matt Soto) and a freshman (James Fitz), they have an excellent chance to make states and surprise some people once they get there.

FIVE THAT JUST MISSED

JP Stevens
Southern
Toms River East
St. Peter's Prep
Pascack Valley

Some of these are probably a bit disappointed in tournament performances, but there's so much talent in this group, including Cameron LaPlant and Brian McAdams of JPS, Jack Hudson and Tom McCann of Southern, Ryan McIntire and Dennis Carrino at TRE, 225-averaging Jared Ammugauan as well as Zack Oswald and Chris Brody at SPP, and the four outstanding juniors at Pascack (Biml, Morris, Lauber & Tipping).

FIVE MORE TO KEEP AN EYE ON

Colonia
Fair Lawn
Jackson Liberty
Neptune
Wall Township

Jackson Liberty and Fair Lawn's tournament showings over the weekend speak for themselves. Wall and Colonia have been solid teams all season and deserved a shout. Neptune has been good too, but now takes a huge leap forward with the addition of one of the very best in the state, Joey Ocello.

Girls tomorrow.

By the way, blogger tells me this is my 100th post.  Thanks to everyone who reads, contributes, emails, or says hi at tournaments.

More Tournaments

Couple more tournaments before we get the rankings. First, the Bergen County boys tournament was held on Saturday.  This is a pretty great event: it's broken into small schools & big schools, with a qualifying set in the morning and an additional set in the afternoon for the top half of the field.  North Arlington took the small schools championship by 57 pins over Mahwah, with Lyndhurst in 3rd.  The big schools title was earned by Fair Lawn with a very impressive 5958 total, which bested the field by over 200 pins.  Ridgewood took 2nd and Demarest 3rd.

Individual awards (based on the A.M. portion only) went to Lyndhurst's Michael Lavell for a 695 set that easily topped the small schools list, and Nick Greco of Fair Lawn, whose 686 series edged past Peter Bondy of Bergenfield (683) and Ridgewood's Brian Skettini (679).  But the performance of the day was owned by Anthony Frangiosa of Fair Lawn.  Despite not getting much action in conference play so far this season, Frangiosa put up a solid 619 in the morning and a tournament-best 288-695 in the afternoon.

Vince has an excellent report here.  Greg Tartaglia's northjersey.com has an article here.

The Snowball Classic at Laurel Lanes pits some of New Jersey's best against some excellent programs from southeastern Pennsylvania.  On Monday, the hot Jersey teams from Saturday continued their streaks through the weekend.

The Brick Memorial boys got big numbers from John Boughton (760) and Michael Guzman (703) to shoot 3221 and take the #2 qualifying spot behind a very talented PA team from Truman.  Just a few sticks behind was Brick Township, whose 3200 took the fourth and final qualifying spot behind good days from Nick Gross (734) and Andrew Masi (689).

Toms River South posted a solid sixth in qualifying (3rd among NJ schools) at 3083, while Seneca, Howell and Warren Hills all managed top 10 finishes.  Boughton took individual honors, with Gross finishing fourth and Kyle Oliveri of Toms River South taking 5th with a 730 set.

Unfortunately, I don't have details about the Baker playoffs, aside from the basics: Brick Township fell to Truman in the semifinals while Brick Memorial defeated Pennsbury. And despite Truman putting together a nine-bagger in the final, the Mustangs prevailed to finish off the weekend double, having won the Central Jersey Winter Classic on Saturday.

The girls' side included the top seven teams in New Jersey, as well as a powerful PA representative in last year's semifinalist Truman.  Toms River North and Warren Hills battled to the very end for the top seed, with TRN squeaking by by just 5 pins on the backs of the Peters sisters (Paige shot 711 and Kamerin 708).  Warren Hills' season-best 2899 was powered by Kelcie Mannon's 707 and Olivia Ostrander's 672.

After Truman, who qualified 3rd, was a small surprise in Lacey.  The #5 team in NJ, who recently welcomed back Claudia Schreier from injury, raced out to a huge 1056 in game one and stayed hot enough to card 2826 for the final qualifying spot.  Toms River South, Brick Memorial, Brick Township, Manchester and Howell finished 5th through 9th respectively.

TRN survived an extremely close semifinal against Lacey, with both teams bowling very well.  Warren Hills needed a huge comeback in their semifinal, posting a four bagger in game 2 to defeat Truman.  And in the finals, the Blue Streaks were able to throw enough good shots (and carry them) to post a pair of 220+ games and take the only title that eluded them in 2017.

The top individuals were Paige & Kamerin Peters, Mannon, Hannah Dalton of TRS (673) and Ostrander, with additional big numbers coming from Amanda Shelters of Brick Memorial (655), Caylin Ryan of Brick Township (632), Howell's Alexa Scranton (618) and Liz Schreier of Lacey (609).

Full results, as they usually are, available at the Shore Conference site.

CJWC and Wrapping the Week

Saturday's Central Jersey Winter Classic was, as it is every year, the deepest field in any high school bowling event in New Jersey.  8 of the top 9 boys teams competed, as well as 14 of the top 20 and 18 of the top 25.  The girls numbers, while a bit top-heavy, were equally impressive: 9 of the top 10, 11 of the top 13.

The scores on the boys' side were huge, with #4 Woodbridge's (event-best) 1175 leading a group of 4 teams that broke 1100 in game 1.  Eight more broke 1000.  #8 St. Joseph of Metuchen put up a monster 1132 in game two, their second 1100+ game, to take the lead at 2238, followed by defending CJWC champs #3 Brick Memorial, #1 East Brunswick and Woodbridge, all within 72 pins.

Only the Mustangs could keep up the crazy pace, firing an 1168 in game 3 to post a 3352 set.  The only team with a real chance to catch them was East Brunswick, and the table for drama was set with a lane breakdown that forced the Bears to move 60-odd lanes to the corner of Bowlero's high end in the 10th frame of game 2.  While the defending TOC champs put up the second highest game 3 in the tournament (1081), they ultimately settled for runnerup status and Brick Memorial took the CJWC title again.  The champs were great across the board: John Boughton's 721 led the way, but all five bowlers put up impressive numbers: Alec Hehir (682), Cam Waldheim (666), Michael Guzman (651) and Andrew Varela (632).

St. Joe's held on for a strong 3rd place finish, highlighted by Brendan Sosinski's 299-694, with Woodbridge and their five 600 sets 4th.  Jackson Liberty, who was in my preseason top 10 but had been a little quiet early in the season,  delivered a tremendous performance, finishing 5th with a 3096 set behind freshman star Justin Bohn's 749.

Six through Twelve: #2 Toms River South (3032), #7 Brick Township (2996), #14 Manasquan (2978), #17 Morris Knolls (2928), #15 North Brunswick (2917), #12 South Brunswick (2900), and #5 Monroe (2886).

Several impressive outings from unranked teams should be noted: Outside of Jackson Liberty, the best finish by a team not even mentioned in last week's rankings was Ocean Township's 15th place (2872).  Toms River East (2861 - 16th) finished ahead of several ranked teams, and Howell (2886 - 13th) did even better.  Manalapan put up a season-best 2877 to finish a more-than-respectable 14th, and Colts Neck (2807 - 17th) did pretty much the same thing.  Good day for Shore-Central-B teams.

Kenny Burdge of Manchester Township put up the event's only 300 game right out of the gate, and finished with the 5th highest series (719) as well.  Sophomore Michael Liu of Livingston won his second individual tournament title (he won the Wheeler) of the season with a big 771 series.  East Brunswick's Sam Bortnick (766), Bohn, and Boughton were the rest of the top five.

Other 700s were tossed by Darian LeMay of Franklin (713) and Rob Murray of Morris Knolls (707).

The girls' event started with a surprise, as unranked Eastern took the early lead with an impressive 935 game; only #2 Brick Memorial and #3 Brick Township were able to join Eastern in cracking 900.  Game two saw the state's top four teams take charge, as #4 and defending CJWC champs Warren Hills and #1 Toms River North joined the Brick schools in the over-900 club, and Memorial took a slim 14-pin lead into the final game.

#6 Manchester put up an excellent 1006 in game three to jump up to a fifth-place finish at 2641, while TRN settled in fourth with a 2662 set.  Brick Township shot 943 to pass Brick Memorial by just 17 pins, 2764 to 2747. And defending TOC champs Warren Hills finished with a flurry of strikes, including anchor Katie Winch going out the door in the tenth, to put up the day's best score, 1010, and pass BT by just eleven pins to take the tournament title. Winch (609), Kelcie Mannon (622) and freshman Olivia Ostrander (616) all put up 600s for the Blue Streaks, and senior sub Jackie Nesbeth came through with a career-high 212 game in the clincher.

Eastern held on for a season-best 2550 set, powered by Cloe Lowell's 251-622, and finished 7th, Unranked Carteret turned a lot of heads with a consistent 2430 series to take 8th, and they were followed by  #13 Woodbridge (2385), #10 East Brunswick (2380), #8 Monroe (2365) and #19 Colts Neck (2325).

Eastern and Carteret defied the rankings the most, of course, but a couple more unranked teams that turned in good performances were Howell in 13th (2264) and JP Stevens in 14th (2258).

Brick Memorial's Amanda Shelters continued her phenomenal junior season by taking the girls' individual title by over 100 pins with a blistering 279-246-226=751 set, third highest in the state on the season.  Caylin Ryan of Brick Township fired 650 to take second, followed by Lowell, Mannon and Ostrander in the top five.  Lanasia Neal of South Plainfield (611) and Winch put up the other 600s, with Mackenzie Dudas of TRN (597) just missing.

We also had a smaller tournament on Friday, the Winter Wave Invitational.  On the boys' side, unranked Ocean Township fired a 3003 set to take down #14 Manasquan (2nd place, 2990) and #8 St. Rose (2959).  Middletown North put up a strong 2908 to finish a surprising fourth.  Mark Butler, Doug Rhoades and Matt Redbord each shot between 626 & 632 to carry OT's balanced effort. Between this and the CJWC, I'm guessing OT is getting ranked next week.

Luis Torres of Roselle (Abraham Clark) put up a fantastic 299-734 to finish as the top individual, followed by Mansquan's Dylan Wolfe (681) and Joe Yatsko of Middletown North (663),

Shore Central A teams dominated the girls' side as well, with Ocean Township besting Manasquan by just a single pin and Wall Township slipping past St. John Vianney by just seven pins (2207-2200) to take third.  Alexa Tieto of OT was easily the star attraction for the girls' event, taking high game and high series with a 235-657 effort, and her team needed every bit of it to take the championship.

Full results of both tournaments are available, due to the absolutely unreal dedication of Coach Bryan Vargas of Manchester Township, at the Shore Conference Website.

Tournament Weekend

The snow finally stopped and was - mostly - plowed away, and we had a trio of tournaments on Saturday.

The Falcon Frenzee was held at Sparta Lanes, and two-time Group II state champions and current #15 Sussex Tech contined their rise, taking the event with a 2987 behind 600s by Joey Steele, Matt Grey and Pat Danielson.  Jacob Lucibello's 698 helped Northern Highlands to a surprising second-place finish with a 2795 set, and #16 Morris Knolls finished 3rd at 2771.

The rest of the field: 4. Wallkill Valley, 2742; 5. Union, 2675; 6. Hopatcong, 2658; 7. St. Peter's Prep, 2612; 8. Montville, 2608; 9. Morris Hills, 2608; 10. Morris Tech, 2472; 11. Jefferson, 2419; 12. Lenape Valley, 2043 and 13. High Point, 1870.

Matthew Marletta of Morris Tech continued his excellent senior season with a tournament-best 726 set.  The rest of the individual boys' top 5 included Lucibello, Nick Thies of Jefferson (693), Jared Ammugauan of St. Peter's (645) and Wallkill Valley's Hunter Horn (639).

Rhianna Smith of Hopatcong was brilliant in yet another tournament firing a 711 series.  Other top sets for the girls included Emma This of Jefferson and Kiara Powell of Union, both shooting 600 exactly.

The FDU-hosted New Year's Team Challenge put out a slightly-harder-than-house shot, depressing scores just a tiny bit, but nowhere near as hard as last year's event.  A lot of talented bowlers struggled, but quite a few came through with solid scores as well.

Greg Tartaglia of northjersey.com has a nice write up right here, and Vince has a recap here.

Eric McKenna of North Arlington fired an event-best 710, while Krista Eskow of Fair Lawn (643) and Holy Angels' Amelia Brunda (631) had the girls' only 600s.

A couple of takeaways beyond the championship runs of West Milford and Warren Hills:  On the boys side, Wayne Hills is absolutely for real, carding a huge 3033 in qualifying.  North Bergen and North Arlington will be dangerous tournament teams.  Coupled with a 3000 set earlier in the week, Howell is trending up.

For the girls, Mahwah's tenacity in the final is the biggest story, but Ramsey's strong 2431 probably marks them as the favorite to win a State Group I title this year.

The Brick Tournament also took place on Saturday, and the scores were, to put it mildly, amazing.

The final results included a series of six Baker games (with one dropped), but just looking at the qualifying 3-game sets... oh, my. Brick Memorial (3286), Toms River South (3224) and Matawan (!) (3201) all lit it up to be in the top 3 (Brick Memorial held on through the Baker rounds to win the title), but were followed closely by TEN other teams that broke 2900:  Edison, Brick Township, Woodbridge, South Brunswick, Lacey (all over 3000), South Plainfield, Jackson Liberty, St. Rose, Southern, and Toms River East.  Now, that's a loaded field to be sure, but still...  Unfortunately, I don't have full individual results yet, so I can't credit the outstanding individual performances that must have happened beyond the top 3: Andrew Varela of Brick Memorial (745), David MacGillivray of Barnegat (733) and Wyatt Buchany of Edison (300/730).

The girls' side was just a crazy, with Toms River North firing a red-hot season-best 3111 to take the event by over 200 pins (including Baker).  Brick Memorial (2933) and Lacey (2827) were excellent as well, with Brick Township, Toms River South and Manchester all cracking 2600, too.  Top girls sets were Kamerin Peters (TRN) with 724, Brick Memorial's Amanda Shelters at 697, and Autumn Laird of Lacey at 671.  I am 100% sure there were more 600s than that.

With the delay in getting standing sheet data from before the break, I'm positive I've missed a few honor scores along the way and I'll try to start fresh with this week's action.  But I did want to mention that the Brick Memorial girls managed 3 600s in a match, by Amanda Shelters (648), Rachel Katz (627) and Veronica Lewis (606).  And preseason all-state pick Joey Ocello made his post-transfer-sitout debut for Neptune count in a big way, firing a 300 game and a 785 set, second best in the state for the season.

Snow Day Catchup

No action in New Jersey for Thursday and I'm guessing Friday.  But there were a pair of tournaments over the break that I have some results for, so we'll do that.

The Bayshore Holiday Classic seems to have had some tough scoring conditions - scores were down from averages by about 10% give or take.  The #2 Toms River South boys were the best during the regular session, putting up an impressive set of 2997 behind Nick Brescia (623) and Andrew Xiques (609).  Nick Gross's 607 helped #10 Brick Township to a 2757 series and 2nd place, while a big 647 from Jarrett Toth carried #8 St. Rose to 3rd place.  Howell (2683) and #6 South Plainfield (2559) rounded out the top five, and Brick Township took the Baker finals 2-1 to win the tournament championship.

Other top sets included Thomas McKeon of Keansburg (665, event high), Robbie Wetzel of Howell (643) and Brandon Patterson of Roselle (600).

On the girls' side, #2 Brick Township took qualifying by over 200 pins, shooting 2427 behind a balanced effort: Christina Gonzalez, Caylin Ryan and Julianna Forbes were all in the 520s. A surprising Matawan squad qualified 2nd (2205), led by Laura McConnon's 508, while #7 Toms River South (2163), Howell (2080) and Old Bridge (1994) completed the top 5.  Matawan pulled off a significant upset by defeating Brick in the Baker finals 2-1 and went home with the title.

Top series for the girls included South Plainfield's Lanasia Neal (550), Natalie Swindell from TRS (547), and Teaneck freshman Shayna Jimenez (544).

Full results are on the Shore Conference site right here.

Up in Sparta, the Sussex County Coaches New Year's Tournament saw a rapidly improving Sussex Tech, #15 in the last rankings, put up a huge 3118 set to take the title by more than 300 pins over #16 Morris Knolls (2808), with Sparta (2611), Livingston (2486) and Hopatcong (2386) completing the top 5.

Joey Steele of Sussex Tech's 711 was the top set, follwed by John Ukstins of Sparta (660) and Chase DiMare of Morris Knolls (656), while Hopatcong's Rhianna Smith had the best girls set at 590.

Thanks to a pair of Sussex County coaches for getting me the info.

Top 50 Averages - Overall

Trying something new with the top averages this year.  I'll be trying to compile both conference averages (subject to standing sheet updates and nj.com information being accurate), and overall averages, which will include any and all tournament data I can get.  Some tournaments don't provide a full breakdown by bowler, but anything I get goes into the totals.

For this post, we'll be doing "overall average", so that conference averages can catch up a little with total games.  This is as up-to-date as I can get, and includes full data from a half-dozen tournaments and partial data on others.  It's unavoidably true that I've got more than a few things wrong here, so if you think you see something inaccurate, please let me know and we'll figure out what happened.  Also, tournament data is always welcome.

I'm using a 15-game minimum, which seems a little low, but any higher really increases the ineligibles. All averages are truncated for publication, but actual averages determine the standings.
