Sectional Wrapup - Girls Central

Full results courtesy of nj.com here.  Story here.  And now a few odds and ends from me.

GROUP I
Carteret and Matawan were among the favorites, and both used balanced attacks to secure TOC berths, with Matawan's Katie Davoe having the best day (536).  South River and Keyport kept it close for most of the day before the favorites were able to pull away. The surprise here was St. John Vianney, which blew way past their average, and my expectations, and came just 36 pins short of pulling off a huge upset. Everyone on the Lancers bowled well, but it was Caylei Hoffman who really turned the tournament on its head, shooting 158-207-212-577 on her season average of 126, and earning an individual TOC berth to go with it.  Amazing bowling.

GROUP II
I guess we need to start referring to #4 Ocean Township's "Big Three", as Alexa Tieto confirmed that her recent results are no fluke by winning the individual high game and series (245-631) and leading the Spartans to a comfortable victory.  Colts Neck was my second choice, and they made me look good by putting away a dangerous South Plainfield team with a strong game three. Colts Neck's top two of Morgan Gitlitz and Eric Dugan stood tall with sets of 577 & 570 and will be making two trips to North Brunswick.

GROUP III
#10 Edison was the favorite and had their customary, consistent, very strong 2538; #16 Freehold Township and their stars, Sarah Orensky (588) and Clare Chaffer (607) were just a little better for two games, and Edison's game three rally came up 30 pins short.  Gotta feel a little bad for #14 Monroe.  They had a fantastic season and shot a very strong 2487 on Saturday, the 4th highest in the sectional, and a total that would have gotten them to the TOC in any other group. For that matter, the same applies to North Brunswick, which shot a season high 2382 only to be denied advancement by a very tough placement.

GROUP IV
Howell defended their title without much drama, stretching out their lead behind a strong game two. As far as qualifying teams go, East Brunswick was the surprise of the day.  I only gave the Bears an "outside chance", but they were excellent and consistent, taking over 2nd place in game two and securing the spot by 67 pins over Franklin. Senior Kate Onorato led East with a huge 618 set (on her 159 average), earning a trip to the TOC for herself as well as her team.

INDIVIDUALS
Usually more stories within the advancers on the girls' side, but lots of familiar names on this list.  We covered Tieto, Onorato, Chaffer, Orensky, Gitlitz, Hoffman (still amazed by her set) and Dugan.  Jenn Ingulli of Ocean Twp, Sam Salzone of Edison, Sarah Smith of Manasquan, Emily Alvarez of South Brunswick and defending singles champ Lanasia Neal of South Plainfield are obviously well-resumed bowlers who don't surprise us by advancing. Victoria Stasicky of Monroe and Eleni Feggulis of South River got shouts in the preview.  That leaves Carly Lodise of North Brunswick, whose 166 average probably deserved a mention in the preview. She used a big 233 single to shoot 578 and earn a spot in the TOC.
