Sectional Wrapup - Girls North

NJ.com story is here.  Full results are here.  And I'll throw in dybuk's story here.  This one might be a little short on detail, as full individual results were not available beyond the qualifiers, so I apologize for not getting everything I needed. There weren't a lot of surprises from a team perspective, to be honest.

GROUP I
Ramsey and Westwood had the tight battle we expected, with Lindsay Pepper making the difference with a big 590 on her 156 conference average.  These two will probably be nip and tuck again on Friday with a state title on the line (and with Carteret, at least, in the mix as well).

GROUP II
This one was pretty much as advertised as well, with #7 Holy Angels and Alexa Hernandez (600) significantly ahead of the pack and Demarest the second qualifier by a reasonably close margin over Paramus.

GROUP III
This was the big matchup of the day, with 3 top twenty teams trying to unseat #2 Warren Hills and/or top each other for the second TOC slot.  Well, Warren Hills did what Warren Hills does, and shot the highest team set of any team in any group in any sectional in the state, 2794, led by Kelcie Mannon's 644.  But, boy was I impressed with Teaneck.  Bowling on the same pair as the #2 team in NJ didn't faze them in the least, and for awhile, they matched WH strike for strike (and cheer for cheer). Teaneck's Margaux Lesser and Mia Aish (619, which scored her a TOC spot) proved they belong on any list of top freshmen, and Valeria Rosario was a huge contributor despite not having bowled in any regular season matches.  The Highwaywomen were only 12 pins back after game 1, and the Blue Streaks didn't put them away until well into game 3.  A real tough break for Wayne Valley, who tossed the fourth highest series of the event but were in the same Group as #1 and #2. They'll have Marissa Cosentini (581) and Claudine Rosca (576) representing them at the individual TOC.

GROUP IV
Once again, it was the favorites that advanced, but the real story is just how well Bergen Tech performed.  A team with a GA of 141 in a four-bowler league will usually shoot something like 2000-2100 in a five-bowler tournament.  The Knights shot 2487.  That's huge. Olivia Wank continued her hot streak for Bergen Tech, finishing 10th individually with a 607 set.  Gotta give Bayonne some credit, too: 110-average teams don't break 2000; like, ever.  But there they sit, in 4th place with a 2002.  Very nicely done.

INDIVIDUALS
Unlike any of the other seven sectionals, Girls North is flooded with individual entries due to the large number of schools that do not field a separate boys team. Seventeen entries this year, and every single one of them is a good bowler: it takes a minimum 170 average just to enter.  And they came through, too: 8 of the 18 TOC advancers were individual entries (compared to 10 advancers of the 200 or so regular girls team bowlers): Alize Stevenson of St. Mary won the day with a 674, Goldera Surles of Union Catholic came in 3rd with a 649, and they were joined by Madison Perry of Hawthorne, Emily Mamunes of Northern Highlands, Lauren Potechin of Millburn, Jaime Golden of Sparta, Emma Thies of Jefferson, and Lauren Marks of Parsippany (who competes despite her school not having any team).  Gabby Pangaro of Clifton, once again a great tournament bowler, shot 668 to take second place. Arielle Wallace of Hackensack and Victoria Vucak of Paramus Catholic were the other advancers not yet noted.
