Snow Day Catchup

No action in New Jersey for Thursday and I'm guessing Friday.  But there were a pair of tournaments over the break that I have some results for, so we'll do that.

The Bayshore Holiday Classic seems to have had some tough scoring conditions - scores were down from averages by about 10% give or take.  The #2 Toms River South boys were the best during the regular session, putting up an impressive set of 2997 behind Nick Brescia (623) and Andrew Xiques (609).  Nick Gross's 607 helped #10 Brick Township to a 2757 series and 2nd place, while a big 647 from Jarrett Toth carried #8 St. Rose to 3rd place.  Howell (2683) and #6 South Plainfield (2559) rounded out the top five, and Brick Township took the Baker finals 2-1 to win the tournament championship.

Other top sets included Thomas McKeon of Keansburg (665, event high), Robbie Wetzel of Howell (643) and Brandon Patterson of Roselle (600).

On the girls' side, #2 Brick Township took qualifying by over 200 pins, shooting 2427 behind a balanced effort: Christina Gonzalez, Caylin Ryan and Julianna Forbes were all in the 520s. A surprising Matawan squad qualified 2nd (2205), led by Laura McConnon's 508, while #7 Toms River South (2163), Howell (2080) and Old Bridge (1994) completed the top 5.  Matawan pulled off a significant upset by defeating Brick in the Baker finals 2-1 and went home with the title.

Top series for the girls included South Plainfield's Lanasia Neal (550), Natalie Swindell from TRS (547), and Teaneck freshman Shayna Jimenez (544).

Full results are on the Shore Conference site right here.

Up in Sparta, the Sussex County Coaches New Year's Tournament saw a rapidly improving Sussex Tech, #15 in the last rankings, put up a huge 3118 set to take the title by more than 300 pins over #16 Morris Knolls (2808), with Sparta (2611), Livingston (2486) and Hopatcong (2386) completing the top 5.

Joey Steele of Sussex Tech's 711 was the top set, follwed by John Ukstins of Sparta (660) and Chase DiMare of Morris Knolls (656), while Hopatcong's Rhianna Smith had the best girls set at 590.

Thanks to a pair of Sussex County coaches for getting me the info.
