Sectional Wrapup - Boys North 1A

nj.com has coverage here.

The always excellent Greg Tartaglia has his story right here.

Vince has a nice writeup here.

Unfortunately, I don't have full game-by-game results here, but I'm sure I'll find a few things to comment on.

Team and individual advancers in bold.

GROUP I
This mostly held to form, with favorite North Arlington easily taking the title that eluded them in 2017.  It really wasn't as easy as all that, as the Vikings were in third after game one, but pushed the top with a sparkling 1111 in game three.  NA was led by Brandon Barth (677) and Kenny Bennett (640) advanced as individuals as well. For the second spot, Leonia sprung a minor upset, starting off with a big 1005 game and putting up a solid 2746 set behind Andy Hong's TOC qualifying 641 and Gabrielle Capalad's excellent 646.

Defending champ Hasbrouck Heights finished in third, followed by Becton (who got a 636 set from Trevor Deliantis) and a nice overachieving effort by fifth-place Bergen Charter, who surpassed their average by about 250 pins.  Sixth-place New Milford had a pretty good day as well, posting a 2076 set on their 128 GA.

GROUP II
The story of the sectional was probably the return of Derek Lewandowski for Ridgefield Park.  Lewandowski shot 709 to take 3rd place, and let the Scarlets to a 3027 series and the title, easily outdistancing co-favorite Mahwah.  Tyler Klein shot 640 to take the final TOC spot for the Thunderbirds.

Fort Lee, the 2017 champs, managed third place, while Lyndhurst and an overachieving Westwood squad tied for fourth at 2644. An impressive showing landed Dumont in sixth place, their 2538 nearly 200 pins over their season average.

GROUP III
This was easily the best, most competitive grouping in North 1A, with the top four all within 53 pins at the end. It was really even crazier than that, as the leaders after game one were Ramapo, who finished 5th, and Garfield, who wound up sixth.

Eventual champion Demarest (1035 game two, 2819 total) and eventual runnerup Bergenfield (1046 game two, 2807 total) took some measure of control in game two, but defending champ Indian Hills absolutely wouldn't go down without a fight, and put up the highest game three of the contenders.  It wasn't quite enough, and the Braves finished third, just 12 pins back.

Garfield's day was very good; their 2621 total was nearly 300 pins over average.  But the most impressive performance might have been St. Joseph of Montvale, who destroyed their averages with a 2766 set (a full 500 over average) for a fantastic fourth place finish.

The champion Norsemen were led by Jordan Tse and his 731 set, the runnerup Bears featured George Ferguson's 644, and Indian Hills did manage to place one bowler in the TOC, Ryan McGuire with a 677 set.

GROUP IV
Bergen Tech jumped out to a surprising lead after game one with a 977 game, but two of the  favorites asserted themselves in game two and held on to take the TOC spots: Ridgewood (2992 for the title) and Pascack Valley (2921) finished more than 100 pins clear of the field. Each of the advancers sent two individuals to Bowlero as well: Matt Myers (700) and Brian Skettini (699) for the champion Maroons, and Trevor Lauber (644) and sectional champion Henry Tipping for the Indians, who managed to make the TOC despite the injury loss of one of their key bowlers, Scott Morris.

Defending champs Northern Highlands and Paramus Catholic had good days to finish 3rd and 4th, respectively.  Bergen Catholic had a nice outing, outpacing their average by a significant margin to finish sixth at 2683.

INDIVIDUALS
Park Ridge's Joseph Mahoney made his appearance count; despite his team not participating, the freshman punched his ticket to Bowlero with a 3rd place 727 series.
