Advancing teams and individuals are in bold
GROUP I
This was a little crazy. After game one, we had a three-way tie for first among favorites #18 Carteret and Matawan and upstart South Hunterdon, with South River only 23 pins back. The top two asserted themselves a bit in the second game, but they only pulled away by 43 pins over South, with the Ramblers taking a 19-pin lead.
The final game saw Katie Devoe's 214 game (547 set) help Matawan shoot 802 to take the sectional title at 2309, with Carteret, led by Ashley Espy's 540 series, holding on to advance to Bowlero with a second place finish. South Hunterdon never gave up and finished just 65 pins short, by far the best performance of the Eagles season; they had exceptional balance with every bowler between 395 and 498.
South River took fourth, with star Eleni Feggulis falling just one pin short of individual advancement at 569 and Kayelena Brimage bowling well (524).
Manasquan finished fifth, while Keansburg and Emily Frizell (523) surpassed their average by 200 pins to take sixth. Caylei Hoffman (570) earned a return trip to Bowlero for St. John Vianney and a shorthanded Keyport squad finished eighth.
GROUP II
The two favorites pulled away a bit in game one, with #14 Colonia's 839 setting the pace and Ewing only 55 pins behind #17 Colts Neck. But the Cougars took over with a huge 980 in game two and held a 103-pin lead over Colonia, with Ewing in striking distance back in third.
Colts Neck was again the best team in the field in the final game, finishing off a superb 2685 set to take the championship. Sectional individual champ Morgan Gitlitz (691) and Gianna Bamonte (sixth place, 641) were brilliant for the Group II champs. Colonia's consistent shooting earned them runnerup status and a spot in the state finals. The Patriots got big scores from Rebecca Hoff (649, 5th place) and Laryssa Fiore (570), who each earned trips to individual states.
Ewing, who got good production from Jazmyn Willis (561) and Korin Ricketts (508) to complete an excellent season in third place with a 2414 set, while South Plainfield fired a great 887 to move into fourth place with Lanasia Neal's 259 game finishing off a huge 688 set, good for second place in the sectional. Ocean Township and Wall Township finished in fifth and sixth, respectively, followed by Middletown North and Iselin Kennedy.
GROUP III
After one game, #19 Edison was in third and #9 Freehold was in second, neither of which was surprising. But North Brunswick in first off a 915 game was, and an impressive one at that. Game two just increased the separation of the top two, with the Patriots up by 20 and the pair up 125 on the field.
Freehold Township finished off a consistent, dominant performance with a 942 in game three to take the title going away at 2754. Victoria Parrinello (572) and Jaden Schaefer (597) each shot their highest sets on the season (I think), while Sarah Orensky continued her red-hot February with a huge 668 set that placed her fourth in the sectional. All three will be back on Wednesday for the Individual finals.
North Brunswick completed their best day of the year to pull off a good-sized upset in taking the second advancer spot to the TOC with a 2473 set. Individual advancer Trinity Gray (605) was the Raiders' biggest hero, but they also got key performances from Carly Lodise (520) and Isabella Torres (517).
#10 Woodbridge, led by Eliza Abreu's above-the-cutline 576, made up the gap and edged out Edison for third place by just a single pin, with Eagles Faby Jean-Denis (538) and Tori Johnson (567) having good days. Sayreville had a pretty good day themselves to finish in fifth, powered by Melissa Yataco (518) and Katie Vince (512)
Watchung Hills, Middletown South and Manalapan finished sixth through eighth.
GROUP IV
At the risk of breaking my arm patting myself on the back, I made a big deal in the preview about how unbelievably close the top three teams in Group IV were, and then they went out and gave an extremely effective demonstration. #12 Monroe, #13 South Brunswick and #11 East Brunswick were all within 33 after one, within 46 after two, and all finished within 16 pins total. That's pretty amazing.
Victoria Stasicky (587) and Bridget Bolan (584) punched their tickets to the individual finals, and Monroe took the sectional title by just 12 pins. South Brunswick's balanced attack, led by Jillian Kwock (522) and Rachel Guida (517), earned the second TOC slot. And East Brunswick was the exceptionally hard-luck odd-team-out, falling just four pins short despite a solid set by Rebecca Reitano (538) and a TOC-qualifying series by Madison Steinbeck (602).
Howell's season ended with a fourth place finish behind those heavyweights, while JP Stevens managed fifth.
Hunterdon Central got a 534 series from Jillian Dambres and finished sixth, follwed by Old Bridge and Piscataway.
INDIVIDUALS
Hamilton West's Brittany Lucci, entered as an individual, had an outstanding day - shooting 687 to take third place in the sectional and win a spot in Wednesday's TOC.
